Altercation Leads To East Birmingham Homicide: Police

Police say an altercation in east Birmingham led to a deadly shooting Thursday afternoon.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Birmingham police say an altercation led to a deadly shooting in east Birmingham Thursday. The incident occurred at 7720 1st Avenue South around 1 p.m.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said officers from the East Precinct arrived on the scene and discovered the victim lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue transported the victim to UAB Hospital where the victim later died. A suspect is in custody.

Mauldin said the preliminary investigation suggests the victim and the suspect were involved in a verbal altercation before the suspect shot the victim. The victim attempted to flee on foot before he collapsed, according to the police report.
