Amazon’s Bessemer Fulfillment Center Begins Operations

More than 1,500 new employees at Amazon began work at the fulfillment center in Bessemer.

BESSEMER, AL — Amazon welcomed new associates inside the 855,000 square-foot building for the first time March 29 to celebrate its “Day One” of operation. The fulfillment center currently employs more than 1,500 full-time associates who will pick, pack and ship essential items to customers.

“Our team at Amazon is thankful for the support we have received from state and community leaders, and we are excited to be a part of the Bessemer community,” said Amazon Director of Operations Travis Maynard. “We’re proud to create great jobs in Bessemer with industry leading pay and benefits that start on day one, in a safe, innovative workplace.”

The announcement of the center's opening came in 2018 and ground broke in October of 2018.

Projections show the center will contribute $203 million to Jefferson County's economic output annually, while adding $123 million to the county's GDP, according to the study prepared by the Center for Business and Economic Research in the University of Alabama's Culverhouse School of Business.
