Birmingham tax preparer indicted in alleged $65 million tax fraud scheme (abc3340.com) — A Birmingham tax preparer has been federally indicted on dozens of counts alleging he filed false returns for clients and himself, leading to tens of millions in improper refunds. Prosecutors say his Birmingham-based business claimed over $70 million in refunds, mostly tied to allegedly bogus geothermal credits. If convicted, he faces multiple three‑year sentences per count.
3. Birmingham airport getting $19 million in runway upgrades (wbrc.com) — Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport will start a $19 million runway reconstruction in September to handle heavier cargo and larger planes, while keeping most flights operating. The six-month project, led by Birmingham-based Dunn Construction, will rebuild a key 2,000-foot section and upgrade taxiways, supporting the airport's growing role in international freight and its broader economic impact on the city.
4. Birmingham cycling community mourning loss of 2 cyclists struck and killed by vehicles (cbs42.com) — Two cyclists, including Birmingham rider Stuart Roberts and 39-year-old Marcus Gordon, were killed in separate crashes over the past week while biking in the Birmingham area, leaving local cyclists grieving.
