Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument opens temporary visitor center during motel renovations (wvtm13.com) — Visitors to the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument can now stop by a new temporary visitor center inside The Commons at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute while the historic A.G. Gaston Motel undergoes renovations. Open Wednesdays through Fridays, it offers information and exhibits as crews expand access, recreate 1963-era motel spaces, and preserve one of Birmingham's most important civil rights landmarks.
   

2. Birmingham tax preparer indicted in alleged $65 million tax fraud scheme (abc3340.com) — A Birmingham tax preparer has been federally indicted on dozens of counts alleging he filed false returns for clients and himself, leading to tens of millions in improper refunds. Prosecutors say his Birmingham-based business claimed over $70 million in refunds, mostly tied to allegedly bogus geothermal credits. If convicted, he faces multiple three‑year sentences per count.
   

3. Birmingham airport getting $19 million in runway upgrades (wbrc.com) — Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport will start a $19 million runway reconstruction in September to handle heavier cargo and larger planes, while keeping most flights operating. The six-month project, led by Birmingham-based Dunn Construction, will rebuild a key 2,000-foot section and upgrade taxiways, supporting the airport's growing role in international freight and its broader economic impact on the city.
   

4. Five to Watch: Birmingham Filmmakers Make A Name For Themselves On Screen (birminghamtimes.com) — Birmingham's independent film scene is booming, with local creators landing festival spots, distribution deals, and key roles on major productions while still pushing for more access, diversity, and funding. Meet five Birmingham-connected filmmakers who are building careers here, mentoring young talent, and urging studios and agencies to hire more locals and support homegrown stories.
   

5. Birmingham cycling community mourning loss of 2 cyclists struck and killed by vehicles (cbs42.com) — Two cyclists, including Birmingham rider Stuart Roberts and 39-year-old Marcus Gordon, were killed in separate crashes over the past week while biking in the Birmingham area, leaving local cyclists grieving. Birmingham Bicycle Club members are sharing tributes and urging caution, while Irondale Police and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency investigate, including a collision involving a Jefferson County Sheriff's vehicle.
