Today's riddle: How do billboards talk? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. 'It's Nice to have you in Highland Park' porch crawl returns for third year, Oct. 18, 2026 (bhamnow.com) — Highland Park neighbors are inviting you onto their porches and into local parks on Sunday, October 18, for a free, family-friendly crawl featuring live music, historic home tours, and a scavenger hunt. The self-paced event runs 3–5 p.m., wraps with an after-party at Rojo, and benefits Friends of Highland Park, Birmingham Historical Society, and Alabama Audubon.
2. How to help Gulf Coast pets affected by Hurricane Isaias (bhamnow.com) — The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is urgently clearing space to house pets displaced by Hurricane Isaias and is asking Birmingham-area residents for help. You can drop off clean dog crates and cat carriers anytime at their Snow Drive entrance or donate online to support emergency response as animals are transported out of the storm's path.
3. Birmingham Red Cross joins 140+ volunteers along Gulf Coast ahead of Hurricane Isaias (wbrc.com) — A team of 12 Birmingham-based Red Cross volunteers is already on the Gulf Coast, helping stage shelters and emergency supplies ahead of Hurricane Isaias. Working from a Mobile headquarters and sites like Orange Beach, they're preparing to provide food, water, and shelter, while encouraging more Birmingham residents to consider volunteering once the storm's impact becomes clear.
4. Hurricane Isaias: Birmingham-area events canceled, postponed or rescheduled (wbrc.com) — Birmingham-area residents face several last-minute event changes as Hurricane Isaias brings severe weather, including a postponed Jonas Brothers concert and a time change for the Legion FC match, now closed to the public but streamed online. Saturday's Pepper Place farmers market, the zoo's Hoots and Owls event, and Helena's Buck Creek Festival are canceled, while Barber Motorsports Park is adjusting its Vintage Festival schedule.
5. Central Alabama Water backs billing change that could raise bills for 90% of customers (abc3340.com) — Central Alabama Water has tentatively approved a new flat-rate billing structure that could raise 2027 water bills for about 90% of its mostly Central Alabama customers, including many around Birmingham. Smaller-usage households may pay several dollars more each month while heavy users could see big savings, and the board is still weighing whether to add an overall rate increase on top of this change.
