Arrest Made In Deadly Memorial Day Shooting

Birmingham police have arrested a man in connection with a deadly shooting in wast Birmingham Monday.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Birmingham police have arrested a man and charged him with murder in the shooting death of 39-year-old Patrick Watson Jr. Monday. The incident occurred early Monday morning in the 2300 block of Tempest Drive.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin said Vonta Antawyn Harris was arrested Wednesday and charged with Watson's murder. Mauldin said the preliminary investigation suggested Watson and Harris were at the same apartment when a verbal altercation ensued. The altercation escalated resulting in both men wounding the other, police said.

Watson was pronounced dead at the scene, while Harris, who was discovered lying in the grass nearby with gunshot wounds, was taken to UAB Hospital.

Harris is now in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail with a $150,000 bond.
