Beloved High School Coach Dies From COVID-19

Huffman High School wrestling coach Derrick Johnson died at the age of 43 from COVID-19.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A popular high school coach died Sunday after a bout with COVID-19. Derrick Johnson, a longtime wrestling coach at Huffman High School, died just five days after his 43rd birthday.

A statement from the Alabama High School Athletic Association said Johnson spent more that 20 years in the Birmingham school system.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, the faculty staff and students," AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese said. "Derrick Johnson had a tremendous positive impact on the lives of the many students he taught and was considered an icon in the community he served."
