Bessemer Man Charged With Murder Of 2-year-old

A 38-year-old Bessemer man has been arrested and charged with the murder of his 2-year-old daughter.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A 38-year-old Bessemer man has been arrested by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and charged with the murder of his two-year-old daughter.

Just after 11:30 Saturday morning deputies responded to a report of a domestic violence situation at a residence in the 1000 block of Manor Circle near Bessemer. They arrived to find a two-year-old girl unresponsive from injuries to her head and face. She was taken to an area hospital where she later died as a result of her injuries.

Information from the scene is that the victim’s mother was arguing with the child’s father, later identified as 38-year-old Ira Reid of Bessemer. The child was a sitting in the car. When the mother got into the car to leave, the suspect threw an exercise weight through the window. The weight struck the child in the head.

Reid was arrested on the scene and admitted to causing the injuries. He was charged with Murder, Shooting or Throwing a Dangerous Object into a Vehicle, Domestic Violence 2nd Degree, and Domestic Violence 3rd Degree. He remains in the Jefferson County Jail with bond set at $165,000.
