Birmingham Man Runs Over Wife While Fleeing Robbery Scene: Police

BLOUNT COUNTY, AL — A man fleeing a robbery in a U-Haul truck ran over and killed his wife, police say. Jimmy Russell Smith, 32, of Birmingham was reportedly trying to escape police with his wife in the vehicle with him when she jumped out of the truck and was killed, according to a WBRC report.

The incident occurred Saturday evening, when police say Smith and his wife left a Walmart store in Oneonta with a cart full of merchandise they had not paid for. They fled the scene when they spotted law enforcement officers arrive, according to the WBRC report.

Smith's wife, Crystal Lynn Carlson, attempted to jump out of the vehicle and ended up under the tires of the moving U-Haul truck and died, the report said.

Smith is charged with theft of property and attempting to elude, and could be charged in the death of Carlson.
