Birmingham PD Remembers Retired Officer Who Died Dec. 29

The Birmingham Police Department announced that retired officer Randall Versie Smith died Monday.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham Police Department announced this week that retired police officer Randall Versie Smith has died. Smith recently suffered a fall at his home resulting in his hospitalization, and ultimately succumbed to those injuries Monday.

Smith began his career with the Birmingham Police Department on January 4, 1988. On March 22, 1995, Smith along with other officers responded to a domestic dispute in Ensley. While responding to the call, Smith rescued a toddler during a domestic incident involving a person with a gun.On this call Smith was accidently wounded by the gunfire of a fellow officer.

Due to the injuries sustained, Smith was unable to return to duty, and he medically retired from the Birmingham Police Department on February 2, 1996.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at 11 a.m., at Waldrop Stadium, 266 Snow Drive in Homewood. This service is open to the public. All other proceedings will remain private per the family’s request.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations be sent to the Children of Fallen Police Officers Foundation.
