Roper is one of two Birmingham city officials that announced their retirements.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper announced this week he is retiring. Roper has held the position for 10 years, and was the Hoover Police Department Chief before taking over the helm in Birmingham.

"Chief Roper's departure provides us an opportunity to take a fresh look at solutions to address one of the most pressing issues facing our city," new Birmingham mayor Randall Woodfin said during a press conference on Wednesday. Woodfin has asked Roper to stay on until the city can find a replacement.

According to a report by the Birmingham Business Journal, Roper joins the city's Human Resource Director, Peggy Polk, in announcing his retirement.
