Here are the top 3 stories in Birmingham today:
- On Monday, Shades Valley High School had law enforcement officers from Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Irondale Police on campus after a threat was made against the school on social media. The school’s principal said they’re following an established safety plan and doing what’s possible to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff. (WBRC)
- Being a single parent can be financially challenging, and the City of Birmingham wants to help. Thanks to a new pilot program promoted by nonprofit organization Mayors for a Guaranteed Income, 110 Birmingham single mothers will be randomly chosen to receive $375 of monthly income for one full year. Female-identifying heads of family caring for at least one child under age 18 are eligible to apply. Online applications are now open through 11:59 p.m. on Feb. 7. (AL.com)
- Last week, 21-year-old Terry Lee Skanes, Jr. of Birmingham was indicted on four counts of drug and gun charges by a federal grand jury. Skanes has been charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, two counts of possession with the intent to distribute controlled substances, and possession of a firearm during and in relation to a drug trafficking crime. ATF and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office investigated the case. (Birmingham Patch)

Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They’re chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond “Dry January.” We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we’ve since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.
Enough of you took Betera up on their 15% discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they’ve extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.

From my notebook:
- Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Department shared a tip on Facebook saying to make sure that infants and young children’s bedrooms are in close proximity of an adult. Smoke detectors should be placed in or directly outside of every bedroom, and to create an escape plan that includes carrying young children and babies out of the house. (Facebook)
- Interested in joining the Birmingham PD? The Police Department will be conducting a Physical Agility Ability Screening tomorrow (Feb. 2) at 9 a.m. sharp at the Birmingham Police Academy. Be prepared to sweat! (Facebook)
