Here are the top three stories today in Birmingham:
- A local teenager has been charged with capital murder in connection with a Jan. 12 fatal shooting. Birmingham police arrested a 16-year-old suspect for the death of 18-year-old De'Undray Nakil Haggard, who was shot last month in the Kimbrough Homes Housing Community. The suspect is currently in custody at Jefferson County Jail and is being held without bond. (Birmingham Patch)
- A Birmingham man was arrested for drug trafficking during a Madison County traffic stop after deputies seized a large amount of meth from his vehicle. The Madison County Sherriff's office says they stopped Brian Lee Curtis, 56, as he was arriving from Birmingham and their K9, Maverick, alerted them to the presence of narcotics. Deputies discovered over a pound of methamphetamine “ice,” as well as three pistols and a shotgun, in Curtis's possession. He was booked into the Madison County Jail on a $100,500 bond. (WAFF)
- WBHM has announced that it is bringing the voices of Birmingham to national NPR audiences through its daily weekday newsmagazine program, 1A Remaking America. The program, a collaborative project supported by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, will examine "the local causes and effects of a nationally growing distrust in institutions." Through 1A Remaking America, the WBHM news team says it will work closely with 1A's production team to "source stories, conduct live broadcasts and events, produce collaborative content, and elevate local journalism."
