Burglary Suspect Shot By Police Officer Faces Charges

BIRMINGHAM, AL — An investigation is under way in a shooting involving a Birmingham police officer and a burglary suspect. The incident occurred late Wednesday night.

Sgt. Johnny Williams of the Birmingham Police Department said that at approximately midnight, officers from the South Precinct responded to the 2100 block of Highland Avenue to investigate a report of a vehicle break-in in progress. Upon arrival, a BPD officer received information of a suspect that was breaking into a vehicle in the rear of the location.

The suspect has been identified as 34-year-old Christopher Scroggins.

The responding officer located a suspect matching the description inside a vehicle in the rear parking lot. The officer and suspect reportedly became involved in an altercation before the officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect. BPD officers provided aid to the suspect until Birmingham Fire and Rescue reported to the scene and transported the subject to UAB Hospital for treatment.

Scroggins was released from the hospital Thursday and is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.

The shooting investigation will be conducted by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
