Carjacking Suspects Jailed After Collision With Police

One police officer has been injured after a collision with a stolen car. Two suspects are in custody.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Two carjacking suspects are in custody after they struck a Birmingham police cruiser early Thursday morning.

According to a report by Alabama Media Group, the incident began with a carjacking of a Jeep on Ninth Avenue North in the city's Smithfield community sometime between midnight and 1 a.m.Thursday. An officer canvassing the area later spotted the stolen vehicle, fell in behind it and called for backup.

The suspects then turned into the parking lot at Parker High School and police pulled in behind. Shortly after, the suspects tried to run over the initial officer who had followed them to the parking lot. They sideswiped that officer's cruiser and then struck another cruiser head on.

Both officers were taken to the hospital, bit neither have life-threatening injuries.
