A 43-year-old Center Point man was arrested Friday and charged with trafficking methamphetamine.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A Center Point man was arrested Friday and charged with trafficking methamphetamine during an investigation by Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies involving a stolen car. Deputies recovered the car at a residence on 2nd Terrace in Center Point, and the suspect who had been driving the car fled on foot but was captured a short distance away. He told deputies that he had thrown the keys to the car in the yard of the residence. Just after noon deputies returned to the home to speak with the resident and search the yard for the keys.

When deputies arrived they encountered three men in the driveway of the home. One was carrying a paper target. As deputies approached, he laid the target down next to a black bag. Deputies saw two guns and a plastic bag containing meth inside the black bag. Eric Michael Simonson, told deputies he lived at the home and he was taken into custody and investigators from the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit were called to the scene.

Narcotics investigators obtained a search warrant for the home. During the search, they discovered 36 grams of methamphetamine, two handguns, body armor, and drug paraphernalia. The street value of the drugs is approximately $3,000. (For more updates on this story and free news alerts for your neighborhood, sign up for your local Birmingham Patch morning newsletter.)
