🌱 Children's ER Doc Warns About Storing Firearms + Slim's Pizza
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Birmingham.

Happy Tuesday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know going on today.
First, today's weather:
Milder with sunshine. High: 55 Low: 43.
Here are the top 3 stories in Birmingham today:
- A Children's of Alabama ER doctor is asking parents to properly store firearms after an increase in pediatric injuries. In 2021, Children's saw more than 70 pediatric firearm patients. "A young child finds the firearm in their home and unintentionally discharges it and either kills themselves or another person," Dr. Eric Jorge explained. (WBRC)
- Slim's Pizzeria is Birmingham's hottest new pizza place. Miller Mobley, the creator of Slim's, shared that it "represents a feeling more than a name" and "it's just that everyday place where you see familiar faces and know that you'll always be taken care of." Since opening in September, Slim's has gained tons of attention and support from guests. (Yellowhammer News)
- A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Birmingham police officer on patrol. The officer attempted to provide aid and summoned medical assistance, but the pedestrian was pronounced dead on the scene. An internal investigation is being conducted by BPD's Internal Affairs Division. (AL.com)
Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera's drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.
Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.
