Coronavirus Cases In Jefferson County Make Up 1/4 Of State Total

The number of coronavirus cases in Jefferson County surpassed 300 Thursday, and continues to climb.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Reports from the Alabama Department of Public Health show more than 300 confirmed coronavirus cases in Jefferson County, making up roughly a quarter of the state's nearly 1,200 total cases.

The pandemic continues to spread across the state, as other counties have seen increases in cases in the last few days. Jefferson County's total made up about a third of the cases in Alabama earlier in the week.

Statewide, the ADPH reports 17 deaths from the illness, and 32 reported deaths total.

"Reported Deaths" and "Died From Illness" are separate statistics, and represent the number of individuals who have a positive lab result and are now deceased. To count a person who died from COVID-19 disease, the medical record of the deceased person has to be reviewed by a physician and Infectious Disease and Outbreak staff

Once review is complete, if the death is attributed to COVID-19, the individual will also be included in the Died From Illness total.
