BIRMINGHAM, AL — When the Denham Building was constructed in 1927, the plan was for the Merchants and Manufacturer’s Terminal Building. Since then, the building and the area around it have seen massive changes, with the Parkside District becoming a hub of activity for downtown Birmingham.

Atlanta-based Third & Urban and Colliers International have announced a diverse mix of office tenants slated to occupy the Denham Building beginning next month, including TechStars Alabama EnergyTech Accelerator and Rintro.

Anchoring the west end of Birmingham’s rapidly growing Parkside District, the 132,000 square foot mixed-use redevelopment features modernized commercial spaces, historic loft apartments and skyline views.

“With such a large and dynamic building, our goal is to attract an array of tenants that will contribute to and benefit from the unique and vibrant fabric of Parkside,” said John Hennessy, partner at Colliers International, the firm leading commercial leasing for the building. “As the technology and innovation sector grows in Birmingham, we want the Denham Building to support this growth as a central location for our city’s innovative entrepreneurs.”

In partnership with Alabama Power, Alabama Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, TechStars is a 13-week mentorship-driven accelerator focused on helping startups address innovative electrical and utility solutions. According to Nate Schmidt, managing director of TechStars, the Denham Building’s location and collaborative atmosphere is crucial in helping his tech program thrive.

“The Denham Building is the perfect spot for our city’s next great companies to emerge,” said Schmidt. “I envision mentors visiting the space to collaborate with founders before dropping by Monday Night Brewing to enjoy a locally brewed beer. Plus, most of our out of town teams will likely live nearby or at Denham. I don’t think Alabama Power could have picked a better place for this program.”

Birmingham-based Rintro, a tech startup featuring a mobile app that enables short-term rentals for outdoor recreational equipment, offers a unique business model designed to remove the cost barrier associated with outdoor activities such as canoeing, camping, rock climbing and mountain biking to make outdoor recreation more accessible to local residents.

Founder Richie Gudzan looks forward to watching his startup grow alongside the Denham Building in the heart of Parkside.

“We’ve known all along that we wanted to launch Rintro in Birmingham but searched for months before we found the Denham Building,” said Gudzan. “For us, it has everything – throwback roots and an industrial past with a modern feel right in the epicenter of Parkside. The growth and energy exuding here right now is tangible. It’s really tough to explain until you come down here and feel it, and we want to be part of that and to keep building on this momentum.”

Monday Night Brewing, scheduled to open next to the Denham Building in April, announced its highly anticipated arrival to the Magic City last summer. The Atlanta-based brewery plans to cater to the thriving local craft beer scene by offering a selection of beers brewed exclusively in Birmingham.

“We have some pretty exciting things planned for Monday Night Social Club – from the unique décor to the expansive food menu and beer list,” said Co-Founder and Chief Marking Officer Jonathan Baker. “Expect bold, geometric designs, mixed textures and comfortable seating combined with a delicious food menu and the most extensive tap list we offer on draft at any of our breweries.”
