Deputies Seize Marijuana And Stolen Guns on Traffic Stop

Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies seized drugs and guns on a traffic stop Monday night.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - During a routine traffic stop Monday night, Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies seized two stolen handguns and some marijuana. Just after 10:15 Monday night, deputies patrolling Highway 78 near East Thomas conducted a traffic stop of a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro for a traffic violation. The male driver continued a short distance and pulled into an alley before attempting to flee on foot. He was taken into custody following a brief foot chase.

During the foot chase, the suspect - 27-year-old Demario Thomas of Forestdale, dropped a backpack. After capturing the suspect deputies recovered the backpack which was found to contain two handguns that had been reported as stolen.

A search of the vehicle revealed a small bag of marijuana, digital scales, and a grinder. The suspect was also found to have an outstanding warrant from the City of Hoover for failing to appear on a traffic violation.

Thomas was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana in the 2nd degree and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Additional charges related to the stolen guns are pending. The case will be reviewed with BATF for possible federal firearms charges.
