BIRMINGHAM, AL — The news of the death of former Wenonah High School and Mississippi State star athlete De'Runnya Wilson this week has sent a wave of shock through the Birmingham community, as well as the Mississippi State fan base. Thursday, a fundraising campaign has been launched in an effort to help Wilson's family with his final expenses.

"Many of you have offered your help. One thing that will bring my heart peace is having a respectable service and celebrating his life the way that he deserves. This is where you can help me and my family through this terrible tragedy," reads the statement on the GoFundMe campaign page for Wilson.

The campaign, which will end January 31, will raise funds for Wilson's funeral (planned for February 1) and to support Wilson's children.

"Never did imagine having to bury a child. January 21st presented an unexpected nightmare which forced my heart into mourning the loss of my handsome and talented son, 'Bear!'" said Tamika Wilson. "Yes, it is terribly difficult writing this- and I don’t really know how much to say. But know that Bear was love and loved. Know that I believe in a God that makes a way out of no way. Know that your kindness, support and generosity means so much to me and will Never be forgotten."
