Excessive Heat Warning Issued For Birmingham Metro

Heat indices in excess of 110 degrees are expected throughout central Alabama Tuesday.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — August is hot in Alabama. That is nothing new to anyone who has spent a summer in the state. However, Tuesday's heat has prompted the National Weather Service in Birmingham to issue an Excessive Heat Warning for the metro area.

For the western and southern portions of Central Alabama today, heat indices will exceed 110 degrees, according to the NWS. Elsewhere in the metro area, a Heat Advisory is in effect for heat indices above 105 degrees.

Temperatures Monday at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport reached 99 degrees, with triple digits measured in parts of Shelby County.

The NWS issued a statement reminding residents to take precautions during the heat wave. "Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside," the NWS said. "When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water."

Mayor Randall Woodfin said a cooling station will be open Tuesday at Boutwell Auditorium from 11 a.m. until sundown.
