Familiar Faces Enter 2021 Birmingham Mayor's Race

A Jefferson County Commissioner and a local businessman are two early entrants into the Birmingham mayor's race.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Just two weeks in to 2021, this year's mayoral election in August in Birmingham already has two challengers to incumbent Randall Woodfin.

Jefferson County commissioner and former Birmingham City Council member LaShunda Scales announced her candidacy in the mayor's race Monday. Scales was a member of the Birmingham City Council from 2009 to 2018 before winning a seat on the Jefferson County Commission, where she serves as president pro tempore.

Also in the running for mayor is Birmingham businessman and former Auburn University football player Chris Woods. Woods, who is founder of C.W. Woods Contracting Services, ran for mayor in 2017 as well.

The general election for Birmingham City Council and mayor will be held August 24, with a runoff set for October 5.
