BIRMINGHAM, AL — A suspect is in custody after a fatal hit and run incident in Birmingham Wednesday. Police said the suspect hit a vehicle occupied by four people, and a child in the car died at the hospital after the incident.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said approximately 10:15 a.m., officers from East Precinct attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Interstate-59 Northbound after observing a white truck traveling erratically at a high rate of speed and endangering traveling motorists.

Mauldin said the suspect in the vehicle refused to yield and exited the interstate. Officers lost sight of the suspect’s vehicle, but shortly afterwards discovered a traffic accident at the intersection of Parkway East and Springville Road.

The vehicle was occupied by two adults and two children, Mauldin said. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and transported all four occupants to the hospital, where a child seated in the rear of the vehicle succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff. The driver of the vehicle sustained life threatening injuries. The other adult passenger and child sustained non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

Preliminary investigation suggests the vehicle officers observed driving erratically struck the vehicle at the intersection of Parkway East and Springville Road and fled the location, Mauldin said.
