Deputies Investigate Fatal Traffic Accident Sunday Afternoon

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal traffic accident that happened Sunday afternoon.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred Sunday afternoon. The drivers of both cars died at the scene. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the victims as James John Griffith, 37, and Michael Lane Ray, 22.

Just after 2:30 p.m., deputies were called to the 7200 block of Old Tuscaloosa Highway where two vehicles had collided.

An adult female in one car was taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two children from the other car were also taken to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Early information is that a white Camaro was traveling west on Old Tuscaloosa Highway when it was struck from behind by a blue Camry. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing. The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of family.
