First-Graders Disciplined After Butter Knife Found At School

Two Birmingham first-grade girls are facing disciplinary action after authorities found one of the students in possession of a butter knife.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Two elementary school students in Birmingham are facing disciplinary action after a butter knife was found in the their possession on school grounds. The incident happened Wednesday at Sun Valley Elementary School on 18th Avenue N.W.

A report by Alabama Media Group said school administrators investigated the matter and found that the second student had encouraged the first student to bring the knife to school. Officials did not say whether they determined what the two first-graders planned to do with the knife.

Birmingham City Schools spokeswoman Adrienne Mitchell confirmed that a teacher saw the knife and immediately confiscated it.

“As always, the safety of students is our foremost concern,’’ Mitchell said. “We have many procedures and policies in place to maintain a safe environment for all students.”
