Former Bama RB To Sign With Birmingham's AAF Team

Former All-American Trent Richardson says he plans to play for Birmingham's new pro football team next year.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Birmingham's new pro football team in the Alliance of American Football league will begin play in February of 2019, and while the roster - and name - of the team have yet to be determined, at least one probable member of the team will be a familiar face to Alabama sports fans.

Former University of Alabama running back Trent Richardson told Alabama Media Group this week he plans to sign with the Birmingham team with the hopes of returning to the NFL some day.

Richardson was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2011, and a member of two national championship teams at Alabama. He was selected by the Cleveland Browns as the third overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, and while his rookie season was considered somewhat successful, the Browns traded him the following year to the Indianapolis Colts where he split time in the Colts backfield getting minimal playing time.

Richardson has short stints with the Baltimore Ravens and Oakland Raiders before heading to the Canadian Football League to play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. An injury ot his ankle cut Richardson's CFL season short.

The Birmingham AAF team will likely try to sign players from Alabama, Auburn and UAB to build a local fan base, as one of the reasons given for the failure of pro football teams in Birmingham has been the fanatic following college football has in Alabama.

Reports say Birmingham has already reached out to former Alabama QB Blake Sims and former Auburn defensive back Robinson Therezie.
