MONTGOMERY, AL — A new bill proposed in the Alabama Senate would legalize lottery games like Powerball and Mega Millions, and would approve casino games in the state's Poarch Creek Indian-operated casinos.

The bill would have to pass the legislature, be signed by Gov. Kay Ivey and put to a vote by the citizens of the state before going into effect. Sen. Greg Albritton is the sponsor of Senate Bill 282, which would also bring a casino to Jefferson County.

The lottery portion of the bill would rise funds for public education in the state.

Ivey has called for further study of the potential revenue that could be generated by increasing gambling options and adding a lottery in the state, which might delay any passage of Albritton's bill.
