Gas Leak Causes Evacuation Of Elementary School In Bessemer
More than 600 students had to evacuate Jonesboro Elementary School in Bessemer Monday due to a gas leak.

BESSEMER, AL - A gas leak has caused the evacuation of more than 600 students and teachers at Jonesboro Elementary School in Bessemer Monday. Parents were asked to pick up their kids at nearby New Salem Baptist Church.
A report by WVTM said the school will be closed for the day. Spire (formerly Alagasco) reported a car ran over a curb and hit the gas meters for the school this morning around 7 a.m. They say the driver of the car left the scene and did not report the crash.
Gas was shut off to the building immediately, so the school has been made safe again, but students will not return Monday. Spire says the car is still on the scene and they will work to repair the damaged meters once the car is removed.
