Gilbert, Roberson Sentenced In Bribery Case

Joel Gilbert was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Abdul Kallon Tuesday morning and was ordered to pay a fine of $25,000.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - As sentencing was handed down in the bribery case involving former legislator Oliver Robinson, Drummond executive David Roberson and Birmingham attorney Joel Gilbert, the three conspirators found that they will serve prison time.

Gilbert was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Abdul Kallon Tuesday morning and was ordered to pay a fine of $25,000. Following his release from prison, Gilbert will serve a supervised release period of two years and complete 100 community service hours each of those years.

Roberson was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison, followed by one year of supervised release. Each were ordered to pay a $25,000 fine, and ordered to complete 100 hours per year of community service while on supervised release. Gilbert and Roberson were found to have bribed Robinson with a $375,000 contract paid to him through his non-profit Oliver Robinson Foundation over two years. In return, Robinson made a variety of official acts to support their agenda for Balch and Drummond, according to the government’s sentencing memorandum. According to a report by the Birmingham Business Journal, Robinson Jr. was sentenced in September to 33 months in prison for conspiracy, bribery, honest services wire fraud and tax evasion.
