Here are the top stories today in Birmingham:

  1. Yesterday AIDS Alabama broke ground on the first emergency crisis shelter for homeless youth in Birmingham that will provide overnight shelter as well as short- and long-term stays. (AL.com)
  2. Birmingham opened the city's Real Time Crime Center on Tuesday. The facility cost nearly $3 million and features facial recognition tech, license plate readers, and a National Integrated Ballistic Information Network System. (WBHM)
  3. The Birmingham City Council approved the 'Embrace Mothers' guaranteed income for single mothers initiative. Single mothers who identify as head of household caring for at least one child under the age of 18 can apply for $375 in monthly payments. (WTVM13)
  4. The school day was delayed at Parker High School on Wednesday morning due to an odor of gas reported in the school's kitchen. The school contained a gas leak earlier this week. (WBRC)
  5. Birmingham Fire Rescue crews responded to a fire on Tuesday morning, to find James Bryant, Jr. deceased in his den. The fire's origins and cause of death are both under investigation. (WBRC)
