Fatal Shooting Of Man Near UAB Ruled Justifiable

An investigation into the death of a Bessemer 20-year-old concluded the man was killed in self-defense.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Birmingham Police Department reported Tuesday that detectives have received a ruling in connection with a homicide investigation into the death of 20-year-old Tremanie Howard of Bessemer. The incident occurred on Thursday, August 8, at approximately 10:49 p.m near the UAB campus.

Officers from the South Precinct responded to the 1800 block of 7th Avenue South to investigate a call of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers observed Howard lying in the 600 block of 18th Street South. He appeared to have suffered an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived along with the Jefferson County Coroner and pronounced Howard deceased on the scene.

Investigators also located a handgun in Howard's possession.

BPD Homicide investigators located and interviewed the person involved in the altercation with Howard. Detectives presented the information gathered during the investigation to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office for review, and following the assessment of the information, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s office ruled the shooting as justifiable.

No warrants will be issued in this case, according to police.
