BIRMINGHAM, AL — Unfortunately for Birmingham the past week included multiple instances that involved police action - including a shooting near the UAB campus that left a victim dead. As well, a man took hostages in a home in east Birmingham and continued a 4-hour stand-off with police.
Those were just two of the big stories from Patch during the week of August 5-11. On a more positive note, the Hoover City Council approved a resolution changing when restaurants can serve alcohol on Sundays. But that good business news was countered when the announcement was made that the Sears at the Riverchase Galleria would close.

Police Standoff In Birmingham Lasts More Than 3 Hours
A police standoff in Birmingham Monday night lasted until the early hours of Tuesday morning, but ended peacefully as the suspect surrendered.

Five of Alabama's top 10 school districts are in the Birmingham metro region, according to new rankings released this month by Niche.com. The No.1 school district in the state is the Mountain Brook city school system.
The Sears store at Riverchase Galleria, one of the company's large format stores, will be closing in late October, according to the company.
Sunday Morning Alcohol Sales Approved By Hoover Council
The Hoover City Council Monday night passed the Sunday Brunch Ordinance, which will allow restaurants to sell alcohol starting at 10 a.m. on Sundays. Previously, alcohol sales were only permitted after noon.
A man was shot and killed near the University of Alabama at Birmingham campus Thursday night, police said.
