Improper Food Temperature, Dirty Kitchens: October Health Scores

The Jefferson County Department of Health inspected 173 restaurants in October; here is a look at some that didn't make the grade.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — During October, the Jefferson County Department of Health inspected 173 local restaurants, and reports show that only five of those eateries were given a score of 85 or below in their inspections.

The most common infraction among those restaurants was improper temperature for stored foods and dirt, mold or debris in the kitchen area.

Here are the restaurants in Jefferson County that scored an 85 or below from the health department in October:

Dawson's Burger/Wings/Fries; 1617 4th Avenue North, Birmingham (81): Points were deducted for failure to keep food at a proper temperature; deli meats were not properly date marked after being opened; food thermometers not working; wiping cloths were left out on the counters and not in the sanitizing solution; cabinet showed signs of rodent infestation.

Full Moon BBQ; 2000 Patton Chapel Road, Hoover (83): Points were deducted for raw chicken, cut tomatoes, cheddar cheese and buttermilk not stored at proper temperature; mildew and residue inside ice machine; food residue on gaskets in RI coolers; damaged gaskets on RI units and chest freezer lid; wet stacking in dish area; no hand washing signs in employee restroom; food residue and other debris in refuge storage area; food residue and other debris under cooking equipment and other equipment within the establishment.

Redmont Hote; Restaurant (84): Points were deducted because milk located in the cooler of the cafe was out of date from original date opened; dish washer used for utensils did not meet proper sanitizing temperature; trash was observed located near the dumpster and needs to be picked up and stored in the dumpster; roaches were observed in the lower storage area; lighting in the cooking area under the vent hood was missing light bulbs for adequate lighting.

Golden Dragon; 2227 Bessemer Road, Birmingham (85): Points were deducted for food not maintained at the proper temperature; food located at the bottom W.I. cooler was not properly date marked; hand sink in the lower basement was blocked by large fan and was not accessible; soiled walls and ceiling.

Bojangles; 1880 Gadsden Highway, Trussville (85): Points were deducted for failure to provide food safety training for all food handlers as required; employees working without hair restraints; failure to maintain food at proper temperature; debris at bottom of all RI units throughout the facility; several areas with dirt and standing water; improper lighting in restrooms.
