Interstate Shootout Leaves 29-Year-Old Birmingham Man Dead

The Birmingham Police Department identified the victim in the Saturday shooting as Edward Tyurri Matthews.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A shootout Saturday afternoon on Interstate 59/20 in eastern Birmingham claimed the life od a 29-year-old Birmingham man. The Birmingham Police Department identified the victim as Edward Tyurri Matthews.

According to a report by Alabama Media Group, Birmingham police and fire medics responded about 3:30 p.m. to the Shell service station on Oporto-Madrid Boulevard and Fifth Avenue North. Once on the scene, they found Matthews - a passenger in an SUV - suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

Police said it appeared it started with shots fired between two vehicles on Interstate 59/20. The SUV then exited the interstate and stopped at the Shell for help. Matthews was taken to UAB hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police have not yet determined a motive for the shootout. No arrests have been announced.
