Irondale Police Chief Announces Retirement

After more than three decades in law enforcement, Irondale Police Chief Ken Atkinson is retiring.

IRONDALE, AL — After more than three decades in law enforcement, Irondale Police Chief Ken Atkinson announced Monday he will retire at the end of the month. Atkinson has been with the Irondale Police Department for five years.

Atkinson began his law enforcement career in 1991 with the Birmingham Police Department, where he graduated at the top of his academy class. After 23 years with the Homewood Police Department, he was hired in Irondale as police chief.

Atkinson obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from Auburn University. He is also a graduate of the 244th Session of the FBI National Academy, and completed the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program, and the Rural Executive Management Institute. Atkinson is married and has two children.

Atkinson will officially retire July 31.
