January Health Scores: 5 Restaurants That Did Not Make The Grade
While most of the eateries scored well on their recent health inspections, five area restaurants scored an 85 or below in January.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Jefferson County Department of Health released the health inspection scores for area restaurants in January, and of more than 200 eateries inspected during the month, only five scored an 85 or below.
Here are the restaurants in Jefferson County that did not make the grade in January:
Johnny Brusco's NY Style Pizza; 2516 Rocky Ridge Road, Vestavia (80): Points were deducted for failure of employees to wash hands for at least 15 seconds after any potential contamination; failure to provide an employee health policy that states what actions are necessary when an employee has a specific symptom or diagnosis related to diseases that are transmissible through food.

Steak N Shake; 1817 Montgomery Highway, Hoover (81): Points were deducted for failure to provide an employee health policy that states what actions are necessary when an employee has a specific symptom or diagnosis related to diseases that are transmissible through food; failure to maintain food at proper temperature; heavily soiled microwave, shelves in the RI units and the backs of the computer equipment; door on the freezer in the shake station is hanging off track; clean pans were wet stacked; condensate leaks in the WI freezer and make table cooler; failure to keep dumpster doors closed; several dead roaches near the electrical panels on the line and the light shields; accumulation of food, grease, and debris under the heavy equipment and on the walls throughout the facility, especially the WI freezer and the wall below the dish machine; failure to provide at least 50 foot candles of light in food prep and ware washing areas.
Basil; 1101 Dunston Avenue, Birmingham (85): Points were deducted for failure to provide food safety training for all food handlers as required; molded cherry tomatoes in the make table cooler; gun holster in the bar area soiled with slime; microwave heavily soiled; clean dishes stored on the rack in front of the grease trap and prep tables are soiled with flour; hood filters above the grill and fryer area soiled with dust and grease.

Pizza Hut; 3748 Lorna Road, Hoover (85): Points were deducted for lack of documentation of food handler cards at time of inspection; failure to provide food safety training for all food handlers; employee drinks stored in food prep stations throughout establishment; failure to cover tea urns and fountain drink machine while in use; accumulation of mold on the interior of ice machine at time of inspection; accumulation of food soil on dishes in storage and dishes left on duckboard over night; accumulation of food soil on the exteriors of large kitchen equipment and the shelving and interiors of RI and WI coolers; accumulation of food soil at the hot holding cabinets and proofers. failure to maintain physical facilities in good repair; heavy accumulation of grease and hood vent filter above fryer.
Wendy's; 800 Academy Drive, Bessemer (85): Points were deducted for failure to provide food safety documentation for employees; chili and chicken nuggets under the proper temperature; failure to use appropriate chemical test kits to accurately determine the concentration of the sanitizing solution; ice buildup on floor inside WI freezer.
