BIRMINGHAM, AL — Two men are hospitalized after a shootout with Jefferson County Sheriff's deputies Tuesday. The incident occurred just after 1 p.m.

Deputy Chief David Agee of the Jefferson County Sheriff's office said deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for a violation, and the driver refused to stop, eventually wrecking his vehicle into a tree near 91st Street North and 90th Place North.

The driver and passenger exited their vehicle and shots were fired at the deputies shattering the drivers side front glass of the patrol vehicle, Agee said. The deputies returned fire and both offenders were struck.

The offenders were transported to a local hospital for treatment, and their condition is unknown at this time. There was no injuries to any of the deputies involved.

This incident is being investigated by ALEA.
