Jefferson County Health Department: Cancel Large Gatherings

The Jefferson County Department of Health made several recommendations to combat the spread of the coronavirus in Alabama.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Jefferson County Department of Health addressed new coronavirus concerns Thursday, as the state remains one of the few in the U.S. with no confirmed cases of the virus. However, officials said they believe the virus is already in the state.

Jefferson County Health Officer Dr. Mark Wilson said approximately 50 people in the state have been tested. He also said that the JCDH has the power to to enforce the public gathering recommendation, but hopes they don't have to enforce it,

"I would argue Jefferson Co has increased risk of COVID-19 and spread of COVID-19 given our number of people, airport, interstate systems," Wilson said.

The JCDH made a series of recommendations to the public to help slow the spread of the virus and to keep residents safe:

  • Cancel any gathering of more than 500 people
  • People over the age of 65 should avoid gatherings of people including cruise travel, air travel and recommend restricting shopping to times when stores are less busy.
  • Get a flu shot if you have not already
  • Wash hands, use hand sanitizer
  • Try to stay at least six feet away from others

Jefferson County Health Officer Dr. Mark Wilson said approximately 50 people in the state have been tested. He also said that the JCDH has the power to to enforce the public gathering recommendation, "but hope they don't have to enforce it and that people will protect their community and family by acting responsibly."

In regard to schools, the JCDH is not mandating that schools close, but are not ruling out that possibility.
