Jefferson County Jail Inmate Found Dead In Cell

BIRMINGHAM, AL — An inmate at the Jefferson County Jail was found dead in his cell Monday. The man's identity has not been released.

Sgt. Joni Money of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the inmate was found hanging in his cell when deputies were performing their standard counts during shift change.

"Deputies attempted life-saving measures, but they were unsuccessful," Money said. "The investigation shows that the inmate had been seen about 20 minutes earlier by other inmates and they did not observe anything unusual."
