Jefferson County Reports More Than 750 New Coronavirus Cases

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Just a couple of months ago, a daily total of 800 new COVID-19 cases was more common for the entire state of Alabama, not just one county. However, as December has continued to see a rapid spread of the virus throughout the country, Jefferson County reported nearly 800 new COVID-19 cases on Christmas Eve.

The 773 new cases in Jefferson County reported over the last 24 hours is the second highest total of new COVID-19 cases in a day the county has seen since the pandemic began in March.

The Alabama Department of Public Health reported 4,232 new cases of COVID-19 statewide Thursday, and 89 more deaths. Thus far, 4,676 people have died from COVID-19 in Alabama.

Statewide, 2,535 patients remain hospitalized in Alabama with COVID-19.

Jefferson County had by far the most new cases of the virus Thursday, but several other counties in the state posted triple-digit totals for new cases over the last 24 hours:

• Jefferson County: 773 new cases
• Mobile County: 323 new cases
• Madison County: 286 new cases
• Shelby County: 228 new cases
• Baldwin County: 207 new cases
• Tuscaloosa County: 194 new cases
• Montgomery County: 177 new cases
• Lauderdale County: 137 new cases
• Etowah County: 122 new cases
• Marshall County: 119 new cases
• Morgan County: 110 new cases
• Lee County: 106 new cases
• Calhoun County: 103 new cases
• Limestone County: 101 new cases
