Jefferson County Sheriff Unveils 'Renewed for Reentry' Program
Sheriff Mark Pettway's new program provides education and job opportunities for individuals that are currently in the Jefferson County Jail.
BIRMINGHAM, AL — When a criminal has been released from jail, many find that getting a job, learning a new trade and earning a living is difficult. And sadly, too many of them end up back behind bars as a result. Jefferson County Sheriff Mark Pettway announced Monday a program that will address that issue.
Pettway announced details on his Renewed for Reentry program, designed to reduce the recidivism rate by providing education and job opportunities for individuals that are currently in the Jefferson County Jail. This will be accomplished by partnering directly with Lawson State Community College, The Dannon Project, The Steel Workers Trust and other central Alabama businesses.
"During my campaign, I harped on the fact that too often there is a revolving door with our jail system, and that must change," Pettway said. "Through this program we will work with individuals to steer them away from destructive behaviors and decisions, and instead steer them towards opportunities that will help them to be constructive citizens of their communities."

This program is for non-violent offenders, Pettway said. Basic interviewing skills, resume skills, and professional skills will be a part of the program. The credentials provided will help the students work toward being successful. This is a referral program through the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
