July Health Scores: Which Restaurants Didn't Make The Grade
These Jefferson County Restaurants scored an 85 or below in their JCDOH health inspections in July.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL - The Jefferson County Department of Health released its health inspection scores for county restaurants, and while the vast majority of area eateries received high scores, some of the area's eateries have some work to do to get back up to code.
These restaurants received a score of 85 or below from the Jefferson County Department of Health in the month of July:
Bessemer Airport Bar & Grill, 850 Mitchell Field Road, Bessemer (72): Points deducted for employees not being registered with proper food handling certification; sour cream and deli ham with mold stored in bottom make station cooler; failure to store food items at proper temperature; food items not properly marked; unclean food contact surfaces and non-food contact surfaces; soiled towels stored on floor in dry storage room; cluttered back dry storage area; missing ceiling tiles above three compartment sink and in utility closet above mop sink near ice machine; hole in wall under three compartment sink.

Dominos Pizza, 1506 Montclair Road, Birmingham (77): Points deducted for failure to provide an employee health policy that states what actions are necessary when an employee has a specific symptom or diagnosis related to diseases that are transmissible through food; failure to provide food safety training for all food handlers; failure to register all Certified Food Safety Managers with JCDH and maintain the appropriate card in a readily accessible location; no food permit is displayed in the establishment; Failure to maintain food at proper temperature; wet wiping cloth stored on prep table tested negative for QA sanitizer; failure to allow utensils to air dry before stacking; failure to keep dumpster doors and lids closed; flies observed on pizza dough and prep tables; soiled apron stored hanging on rack in contact with clean pans.
Bistro V, 521 Montgomery Highway, Vestavia Hills (80): Points deducted for failure to post current inspection report in a conspicuous place inside the food establishment; failure to maintain food at a proper temperature; interior of ice machine soiled at time of inspection; mold accumulation on the drink nozzle at bar; accumulation of soil and debris on floor drains at the three compartment sink and at establishment bar; accumulation of food soil on floors beneath large kitchen equipment; accumulation of dust on the ceiling tiles above main line; slight accumulation of food soil on the walls near food prep areas; food employees preparing food on the stove top without the use of the ventilation system; unlabeled bottles of bleach water discovered by EHS at time of inspection.

California Pizza Kitchen, 238 Summit Blvd, Birmingham (80): Points deducted for employees not properly washing hands prior to handling food; failure to maintain food at proper temperature; unclean food contact surfaces and utensils; failure to provide quaternary ammonia solution at concentration specified by manufacturer for storing cloths used to wipe counters and equipment; several handsinks located throughout make line are without soap and/or paper towels; failure to keep dumpster doors and lids closed.
Rally's, 2100 Center Point Parkway, Center Point (81): Points deducted for failure to maintain food at proper temperature; failure to keep ice machine clean; leak in walk-in cooler; missing lid on dumpster; flies inside establishment; unclean floors and walls; improper lighting.
Arby's, 3990 Methodist Circle, Bessemer (85): Points deducted for employees failing to keep personal drinks and food away from food prep area; expired milk stored in WI cooler and pull out cooler drawer; dirty food equipment stored under prep table ready for use; extremely dirty cooler gaskets and bottom shelves under prep table; flies in kitchen area; stains on walls above 3 compartment sink; dirty floor drains; debris under shelves in WI freezer and grease spills under equipment.
Auntie Anne's Soft Pretzels, Riverchase Galleria, Hoover (85): Points deducted for failure to provide documentation of their employee health policy; food containers not properly labeled; accumulation of mold, mildew, and slime inside the ice machine; deep crack on the countertop of the island; faucet at the 3-compartment sink, pipe under the prep sink, and one of the pipes under the fountain drink machine are leaking; damaged floor tiles in front of the 3-compartment sink and damaged base tiles in restroom.
Ranch House and Makarios Kabob & Grill, 2931 Columbiana Road, Vestavia Hills (85): Points deducted for failure to maintain food at proper temperature; falafel stored in plastic shopping bag; soiled microwave; failure to keep dumpster doors and lids closed; food soil on walls in food prep areas; accumulation of grease and residue on the floors beneath and behind large kitchen equipment throughout establishment.
