Man Arrested After Shootout, Chase With Birmingham Police

A man was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder, among other charges, after a shootout and chase with police Sunday.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A man is in custody after a shootout and high speed chase with Birmingham police early Sunday morning. The incident began shortly after 1 a.m. in the 9400 of Parkway East in Roebuck, and ended in the 2800 block of John Hawkins Parkway in Hoover.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said a Birmingham police officer was stopped at a traffic light when a vehicle pulled up next to his and the driver, later identified as 28-year-old Donnie Brock, Jr., began firing at the officer. Mauldin said the officer returned fire, and a chase ensued.

The pursuit ended in the 1200 block of Arkadelphia Road when Brock’s vehicle became disabled, Mauldin said. A standoff between Brock and law enforcement officers followed, during which time Brock reportedly began firing shots at civilians. A man and woman were each struck by gunfire. Both were taken to UAB Hospital where the man was treated for injuries and is expected to recover. The woman is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

During the standoff, Brock reportedly obtained control of a Jefferson County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle and fled the scene. Another pursuit ensued, through Birmingham, Vestavia Hills and Hoover, where Brock was eventually apprehended.

Brock is charged with attempted murder and firing into an occupied vehicle. He is being held at Jefferson County Jail with no bond.
