Man Charged In Hit And Run That Killed Birmingham Teen

A man has been charged in a hit and run incident from May 12 that claimed the life of 18-year-old I'akyria Rukell Kimbrough.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A man has been charged in the hit and run death of 18-year-old I’akyria Rukell Kimbrough of Birmingham.

Lawrence Moore, Jr., 65, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury or death after turning himself in to Birmingham Police on Tuesday. He was booked at the Jefferson County Jail and was released after posted a $15,000 bond.

According to a report from Alabama Media Group, the incident occurred May 12 at about 10:10 p.m. Saturday on I-59 northbound at Center Street. Authorities said Kimbrough and a friend were in a small sedan traveling northbound on the interstate near Arkadelphia Road. Their vehicle became disabled and they became stranded in the left-hand travel lane of the interstate.

Both the driver and Kimbrough exited the vehicle and were standing on the interstate when Kimbrough was struck by another passing motorist. She was later pronounced dead on the scene at 10:59 p.m.

Authorities say the incident is still under investigation.
