Man Found In Vehicle On Oporto-Madrid Boulevard Dies
After reports of gunshots, police found a man injured in his vehicle under I-59 at Oporto-Madrid Boulevard. The victim died shortly after.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Police found a man critically injured in his vehicle under the I-59 overpass on Oporto-Madrid Boulevard Monday afternoon after gunfire was reported in the area. The man in the vehicle later died from his injuries. The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Jeremy Lavender. He was 24, and lived in Birmingham.
Birmingham police and firefighters responded to Oporto-Madrid Boulevard under the I-59 overpass just after 4 p.m. Monday. East Precinct Capt. Allen Hatcher told Alabama Media Group they received multiple reports of gunfire shortly before the crash.
Lavender was found in a wrecked grey Honda Accord under the overpass. He was taken to UAB Hospital’s Trauma Center with severe injuries and later pronounced dead.

There was no immediate sign Lavender had been shot, but there was at least one bullet hole in his vehicle. Oporto-Madrid Boulevard at I-59 is blocked off for the ongoing probe. About seven blocks away, police also blocked off the intersection at Fourth Avenue South and Oporto-Madrid Boulevard where multiple shell casings were found in the street.

Williams said they are awaiting an autopsy to show how Lavender was killed but the death is being treated as a homicide. No suspects are in custody.
