Man Killed In Birmingham Shooting, Suspect In Custody

A 27-year-old Birmingham man was killed in a shooting Friday afternoon. A suspect is in custody.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 27-year-old man was shot and killed Friday afternoon in Birmingham. Police say they have a suspect in custody. The victim has been identified as Robert Ezell Smith of Birmingham.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said police responded just after 1:30 p.m. Friday to reports of shots fired at 47th Street and 9th Terrace North. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and Smith was transported to UAB hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Mauldin said the preliminary investigation suggests that an exchange of words occurred between Smith and another man prior to the victim being shot. Shortly after, the suspect turned himself in.
