Man Shoots Himself After Police Traffic Stop

A 54-year-old man died Tuesday morning in an apparent self-inflicted shooting during a traffic stop.

BIRMINGHAM, AL - A traffic stop in Birmingham turned tragic when a man pulled over by police fatally shot himself. The incident happened after 9 a.m. Tuesday in the 3400 block of 39th Place North of East Lake Boulevard.

Police say they attempted to pull over a vehicle, which then pulled into a driveway. Before they could get out of their patrol cars, the driver of the car shot himself. Police body cameras confirm the turn of events, according to an Alabama Media Group report.

The incident is not being investigated as a homicide, and the name 54-year-old man has not been made public. Jefferson County Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates was also at the scene and said the investigation is ongoing. He said the no foul play is suspected.
