Man Shot And Killed In Birmingham's Gate City Community

A 27-year-old man has died after he was shot Tuesday night in Birmingham's Gate City community.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A man was shot and killed in the Gate City community of Birmingham Tuesday night. Police identified the victim as 27-year-old Deterius Mathews. He was taken to UAB Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

East Precinct officers responded at 10:18 p.m. to a report of a person shot in the 6700 block of Interlaken Avenue, according to an Alabama Media Group report. Once on the scene, they found the victim on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police do not have a suspect in custody as of Wednesday morning.

Mathews is Birmingham’s 63rd homicide so far this year, according to Alabama Media Group. Of those, at least seven have been ruled justifiable and another victim died in 2019 after being shot last year. Birmingham has 63 of the 94 homicides in all of Jefferson County.
