Man Shot By Police In Avondale
A man wielding a gun was shot by Birmingham police in the Tom Brown Village public housing community.
BIRMINGHAM, AL — A man who was reportedly wielding a gun in the Tom Brown Village public housing community of Avondale was shot by police Monday night.
Sgt, Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said a South Precinct officer was conducting routine patrol in the Tom Brown Housing Community just before 11 p.m. Monday when multiple shots rang out in the area.
Upon further investigation, Mauldin said the officer encountered a suspect in the 4100 block of Messer Airport Highway alley. The suspect reportedly confronted the officer with a handgun. The officer then discharged his weapon wounding the suspect.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue reported to the scene and transported the suspect to UAB Hospital. The suspect’s injury is reported to be non-life threatening. There was no injury to the officer.
An investigation into the shooting will be conducted by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.
